What is scan to BIM?
Scan to BIM is a method for digitising existing buildings and structures. 3D scanning captures accurate data from a physical environment and turns it into an intelligent digital model.
The process starts with a thorough scan of the building, using 3D laser scanning or photogrammetry to collect accurate measurements inside and out. The result is a detailed point cloud that gives a precise picture of the building's structure.
The point cloud is then processed digitally. Noise and inaccuracies are removed, so that there is a clean, reliable basis for modelling.
From that, a digital model is built in BIM software such as Revit. It recreates the building's geometry with high precision, including walls, floors, roofs, windows and building services, with everything positioned correctly relative to the real building.
Finally, the finished BIM model is delivered. It can be used for design, renovation, operation and maintenance. It gives a complete digital overview of the building and is a useful tool throughout the building's life cycle.
