From survey report to model: how we bring survey control points into BIM

Survey control points from land surveying matter for accurate positioning on building projects, but they are often left out of digital models. Using IFC and Python, they can easily be visualised and linked directly to the BIM model, giving better precision and traceability.

On a recent building project, control points from a survey report from Oregon were brought into the BIM model for accurate positioning and traceability. A Python script built on IfcOpenShell placed the points in the model as objects (cones and origin markers) exactly where the survey points had been recorded. This made it possible to compare the points in the model with the paper report and with the site, which confirmed that the positions matched. The control points were also physically marked with stickers on site, which tightened the link between the digital model and the real site.

Metadata from the report, such as the type of tape used (for example Prismat tape), was added as properties in the model. Users can click an object and see information taken directly from the report PDF, which gives good documentation and transparency. The method also makes it easier to follow up on deviations, such as those found when scanning the building. It is an effective way to bring technical data into the digital model, and the outcome is a more precise and informative BIM model that supports both design and follow-up on site.
